Broncos legend Mike Shanahan’s coaching tree lives on in NFL playoffs
The legacy of former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan continues in the NFL playoffs. Three of the four head coaches remaining share a connection to Shanahan. Two coaches with Shanahan ties lost in the wild-card round.
Here’s a look at the Shanahan coaching tree:
Mike Shanahan
Years as head coach: 1988-89 (Los Angeles Raiders), 1995-2008 (Broncos), 2010-13 (Washington)
Record: 170-138 regular season, 8-6 postseason
Things to know: Two-time Super Bowl-winning coach with the Broncos. He was offensive coordinator for the Super Bowl-winning San Francisco 49ers in 1994. Offense is known for zone-running plays and play-action passes. His offense is still an important part of today’s NFL.

Gary Kubiak
Years as head coach: 2006-13 (Houston Texans); 2015-16 (Broncos)
Record: 82-75 regular season, 5-2 postseason
Connection to Mike: Offensive coordinator with the Broncos
Things to know: Kubiak is the most successful of Shanahan’s coaches as he took home the title with the Broncos at Super Bowl 50. He helped create the Shanahan offense in Denver and helped John Elway win two Super Bowls.

Kyle Shanahan
Years as head coach: 2017-present (San Francisco 49ers)
Record: 64-51 regular season, 6-3 postseason
Connection to Mike: Mike’s son. Also the offensive coordinator in Washington.
Things to know: He took the 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2019 when he lost 31-20 to the Chiefs. Kyle has a knack for getting the most out of his quarterbacks, including Brock Purdy, who led the 49ers to the NFC’s top seed this season.

Matt LaFleur
Years as head coach: 2019-present (Green Bay Packers)
Record: 56-27 regular season, 3-3 postseason
Connection to Mike: LaFleur was the quarterbacks coach in Washington.
Things to know: He has made the playoffs four out of his five years in Green Bay. Will face off with Kyle in the NFC divisional round Saturday. LaFleur helped Aaron Rodgers win two MVP awards.

DeMeco Ryans
Years as a head coach: 2023-present (Houston Texans)
Record: 10-7 regular season, 1-0 playoffs
Connection to Mike: Ryans was Kyle’s defensive coordinator in San Francisco.
Things to know: While Ryans never worked with Mike directly, the Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik runs the Shanahan offense and worked with Kyle in San Francisco. Ryans has the Texans in the divisional round of the playoffs in his first season.

Sean McVay
Years as a head coach: 2017-present (Los Angeles Rams)
Record: 70-45 regular season, 7-4 postseason
Connection to Mike: He worked on Shanahan’s staff in Washington as an offensive assistant and tight ends coach.
Things to know: The Rams hired McVay at the age of 30, which made him the youngest coach in modern NFL history. He led the Rams to a win over the Bengals in Super Bowl LVI. McVay took the Rams back to the postseason this year with a young team but fell to the Lions in the wild card round.

Mike McDaniel
Years as head coach: 2022-present (Miami Dolphins)
Record: 20-14 regular season, 0-2 postseason
Connection to Mike: McDaniel was a Broncos ball boy before becoming a coaching intern in 2005.
Things to know: Before joining the Dolphins, he worked with Kubiak in Houston. He then went back to Mike in Washington. Also worked with Kyle in Atlanta. The Dolphins have made the playoffs in his first two seasons.
Notables
—Former Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn got his start with Mike Shanahan in 2000 as a Broncos special teams assistant. He is currently on Kyle’s staff in San Francisco.
—Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski worked with Kubiak in Minnesota in 2019.
—Mike LaFleur, who is Matt’s brother, is the offensive coordinator for McVay’s Rams. He also worked with Kyle in San Francisco.
