An flyover by the state’s Multi-Mission Aircraft Wednesday morning confirms the Goltra Fire, burning in Clear Creek Canyon, is 198 acres in size, according to a social media post from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
Helicopters from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control are making water drops as 65 firefighters on the ground work to contain the blaze.

The Goltra Fire burning in Clear Creek Canyon grew significantly overnight to more than 200 acres, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. US Hwy 6 was closed beginning Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024 overnight while fire crews worked on fighting the wildfire on the northern slopes of the canyon.

US Highway 6, west of Golden, is closed due to the fire, the Colorado Department of Transportation said. Highway 6 is remains closed in both directions between Colorado Highway 119 and Colorado Highway 93 (Golden), CDOT said.

The fire started Tuesday afternoon and burned about 10 acres in rugged terrain off the highway, the sheriff’s office said.

The fire is burning north of Highway 6 Tunnel 1, in Clear Creek Canyon north of Lookout Mountain just west of Golden. It appears the fire was caused by a lightning strike Tuesday afternoon, the sheriff’s office and Golden Fire Department said.
It started high on the hill, then burned to the road where it was contained. Firefighters have started backburning to keep it from jumping the road, Kelley said.
