Tesla Cybertruck towing wood chipper sparks wildfire in southwest Colorado

A Tesla Cybertruck, shown towing a wood chipper, caught fire on Sunday afternoon on private land outside Redvale, a town in southwestern Colorado, igniting a small wildfire, officials reported via Facebook.

The fire was fully contained by Monday morning, officials said.

According to the sheriff’s office, the fire began around 1:15 p.m. in the Coventry Hill area, about four miles west of Norwood in Montrose County.

San Miguel County deputies, Norwood Fire Protection District, and Montrose County deputies responded to find a Cybertruck fully engulfed in flames, along with a towable Vermeer wood chipper, as depicted in photos. Initial reports incorrectly identified the second piece of equipment as a generator. According to the Norwood Fire Department, the truck and chipper had not been used for approximately one hour prior to the fire.

The blaze spread to surrounding vegetation, ultimately burning under 1 acre. By 2:30 p.m., an estimated 30 firefighters were on the scene, working to suppress the fire with assistance from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service crews and equipment, according to officials.

Officials reported the fire was 90% contained by 3:25 p.m. Sunday. Smoke remained visible into the night, and Norwood Fire personnel stayed on scene overnight for monitoring. Crews fully contained the fire by 8:45 a.m. Monday.

No structures were threatened, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains unknown.

Agencies involved in the response included Norwood Fire, Nucla-Naturita Fire Protection District, Paradox Fire, the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Williams Construction, and deputies from San Miguel and Montrose counties.

Norwood Fire Chief John J. Bockrath told the Denver Gazette that as of Wednesday, the fire is still under investigation and appears to be accidental at this time. Bockrath said the point of origin for the fire was at the rear driver’s side of the Cybertruck, but the cause is still undetermined.
