After a weekend closure for maintenance, Denver’s transportation department has decided to reduce the speed limit by 20 mph along a popular bridge south of downtown.
Beginning at 5 a.m. on Monday, 8th Avenue, between Mariposa and Tejon streets, will reopen with a reduced speed limit, from 30 to 10 mph, according to a Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure news release issued Sunday.
8th Avenue, between the two roads, crosses over train tracks, just north of where 6th Avenue begins as a freeway to the west.
Over the weekend, crews installed two steel plates atop damaged joints of the bridge until they are prepared.

DOTI officials are unsure whether this new speed limit will remain in place permanently.
Transportation officials insist that motor vehicle operators “drive slowly over the bridge and two steel plates.”
The multi-use path across the viaduct remains open to walking and biking.
Officials are eyeing an 8th Avenue bridge replacement, earmarked under the proposed Vibrant Denver Bond, which the Denver City Council is considering for the November ballot.
The west side of the viaduct requires a replacement to lower the street level “for greater connectivity,” according to DOTI.
“DOTI anticipates that maintenance will continue to be necessary on the viaduct and is working to ensure it continues to serve the traveling public,” transportation officials said.
