Another update has been released related to a fatal two-vehicle crash that took place along the stretch of Highway 9 between mountain towns of Kremmling and Silverthorne on the morning of August 4.

According to the Grand County Coroner’s Office, the five individuals who died in the head-on collision were members of a local Kremmling family, aged two to 34. The family was traveling in a GMC Yukon when it collided with an F-150 pick-up truck. The initial investigation into the situation appeared to indicate that the 25-year-old driver of the truck traveled into the southbound lane of the highway, striking the family’s SUV head-on.

After the collision, both vehicles became fully engulfed in flames. Despite heroic efforts of first responders, the five family members were pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the pick-up truck was transported to a hospital with serious life-threatening injuries.

The family members who died were identified as driver Manuel Cabral-Torres (34), Andrea Banuelos-Salazar (30), Maria Cabral-Banuelos (12), Manuel Cabral-Banuelos (5), and Andres Cabral-Banuelos (2).

“The Grand County Coroner’s Office extends its deepest condolences to the surviving loved ones, friends, and the entire community,” read a press release on the matter. “The loss of an entire family is an unspeakable tragedy, and our hearts are with all who are grieving during this incredibly difficult time.”

The crash remains under investigation.

Colorado State Patrol Chief Matthew C. Packard released a statement on August 6 related to a string of recent head-on collisions that have occurred in Colorado: “Despite Colorado’s downward trend for fatal crashes this year, these past two months have been devastating for the loved ones and communities left behind due to violent head-on collisions. Wrong-way and wrong-side-of-the-road crashes are frequently the results of impairment, inattentive driving or excessive speed. These types of violations are ones our troopers seek out each day to prevent needless injury and death.”

Sincere condolences go out to those impacted by this tragic situation.
