Endurance sports legend Kilian Jornet is set to bring his talents to Colorado and beyond this September, during a mission to summit every 14,000-foot peak in the contiguous United States via completely human-powered means.
According to the American Trail Running Association, Spanish trail runner Jornet will be traveling only by foot and bicycle, climbing two qualifying peaks in Washington, 12 in California, and 58 in Colorado – 72 peaks total.
The project is set to start in the Centennial State in early September, with Jornet scaling Longs Peak. Jornet has dubbed the challenge ‘States of Elevation.’
Jornet is no stranger to seeking incredible challenges in the world of alpine trail running, having summited all 3,000 meter peaks in the French and Spanish Pyrenees by foot in 2023, traveling about 302 miles in eight days. In 2024, he climbed all 82 4,000 meter peaks in the Alps over 19 days without the use of any motor vehicles. That trip traveled 650 miles with close to 250,000 feet of elevation gain.
Jornet has also won the Hardrock 100 five times, setting a course record in 2022 in what’s considered to be one of the most difficult ultramarathons on the planet.
While all of these feats are undoubtedly worth the praise they’ve received, he’ll be traveling more miles and gaining more elevation in the ‘States of Elevation’ project that any of the aforementioned challenges.
There’s no doubt about it, Colorado’s community of fourteener climbers will be cheering him on. Follow along with his progress on Jornet’s Instagram page here.
