Coach Sean Payton gives telling update on running back competition | Broncos notebook
ENGLEWOOD — The Broncos’ competition at running back will take center stage leading into the final preseason game.
J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey are solidified starters after strong training camp performances. The likely two remaining spots on the 53-man roster are up for grabs between Jaleel McLaughlin, Tyler Badie, Blake Watson and Audric Estime.
“I know there’s been a lot of attention to: ‘Hey, what is this going to look like?’ And those are good questions,” Payton said after practice Tuesday at Broncos Park. “A lot of it is the defense you’re seeing. … We get used to our defense quite a bit because we’re seeing most of the reps versus them. We have another game still coming up, and then we go from there.
“I thought the backs had some big runs today. Dobbins had, shoot, a real good run. We’ll keep working on it, though, mesh points and the timing of it all.”

Pre-snap penalties
The one glaring negative from a preseason win over the Cardinals? Pre-snap penalties.
Denver committed seven penalties before the snap Saturday.
“We showed them all to the team the other day. They were going to watch them,” Payton said. “There’s pre-snap (and) there’s post-play. We can control those. … Those are a little bit more discipline (related).”
Seventh-round rookie tight end Caleb Lohner — a converted Utah and Baylor basketball player — committed two such penalties against Arizona. Payton agreed “a little bit” it was related to Lohner’s relative inexperience playing organized football, before adding: “But we got to get going.”
Lohner has the support of teammates like tight end Adam Trautman.
“It’s not even that he’s just a rookie. He played 50-whatever snaps in college,” Trautman said. “He obviously realizes the mistakes, and he needs to, but also during the game you’ve got to just move on. Because it’s going to affect the next play and the next play.”

Bonitto talks Robinson, Greenlaw
Broncos outside linebacker Nik Bonitto is excited about two new additions on defense.
Inside linebacker Dre Greenlaw, recovered from a training camp quadriceps muscle injury, appeared to be a full participant in Tuesday’s practice with pads at Broncos Park.
“When he’s been out here, he’s probably the most physical guy on the field,” Bonitto said of Greenlaw. “He’s always itching to hit somebody, and you can definitely feel him when he’s out there. He’s been a great addition so far from what I’ve seen.”
The Broncos selected rookie edge rusher Que Robinson with the No. 134 overall pick (fourth round) of the NFL draft.
“He’s (further) along than I can say I was as a rookie,” Bonitto said. “When he goes, there’s nobody that can stop him. He’s just a freight train. He can run through anybody. … When he knows what he’s doing, he can just go. He’s really dominant.”
Broncos sign FB Adam Prentice; OL Nick Gargiulo placed on injured reserve
Briefly
The Broncos held tryouts on Tuesday, per the NFL transactions wire, with four defensive tackles: Michael Dwumfour (Rutgers), Thor Griffith (Louisville), Devonnsha Maxwell (Chattanooga) and Gavin Meyer (Southern California). … Denver is still in the market for fullbacks and tight ends with injuries to FB Michael Burton and TE Nate Adkins. Payton said: “We’ll continue to pay real close attention to the tight end wire and also the fullback. We had a few of those guys in to work out.” … Payton confirmed that offensive lineman Nick Gargiulo, placed on injured reserve Monday, suffered a torn ACL in preseason against the Cardinals.
