The Broncos got an early start Sunday on trimming their roster.
The Broncos informed at least five players they will be waived heading into Tuesday’s 2 p.m. deadline for initial 53-man rosters to be set for the regular season. According to sources and reports, being let go are outside linebacker Andrew Farmer, cornerback Micah Abraham, wide receiver Joaquin Davis, guard Clay Webb and cornerback Joshua Pickett. The latter three were signed as undrafted rookies and Pickett received an injury designation.
The players were notified a day after the Broncos closed the preseason with a 28-19 win at New Orleans. The moves weren’t officially made before Sunday’s 2 p.m. deadline to be on the NFL transaction wire for the day.
Farmer had little chance to make the 53-man roster at what is perhaps Denver’s deepest position. He got into eight games in 2023 for the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted rookie from Division II Lane College in Tennessee and spent last season on the Broncos’ practice squad.
Abraham, a sixth-round pick by Indianapolis in 2024, was signed Aug. 15 for depth in the secondary after the Broncos had some injuries. He was considered then to likely have a short stay with Denver.
Davis could have a long stay. The North Carolina Central product is a candidate for the practice squad. Davis, who had two catches for 25 yards in three preseason games, is raw but the Broncos like his 6-foot-4 frame.
Webb, who played at Jacksonville State, also could be a candidate for the practice. The Broncos like to bring along young offensive linemen they believe have potential.
Pickett, from Duke, played against the Saints with a cast on his left wrist.
