Major closure on I-70 after vehicle catches fire and starts leaking hydrochloric acid
A major closure is underway on I-70 after a commercial motor vehicle caught fire, resulting in a hazardous materials concern.
According to Colorado State Patrol, their initial response to the incident took place at about 7:51 a.m. near mile marker 258, which is located between Golden and Genesee. The situation intensified when it was realized that the vehicle involved in the incident was leaking hydrochloric acid, per a preliminary report.
Multiple highways were closed in the area as the Colorado State Patrol Hazmat unit, along with other assisting agencies, responded. Based on a look at CDOT travel mapping at 9:40 a.m., these closures appear to include both lanes of I-70 between Exit 254 (Genesee) and Exit 260 (a mile west of Golden), as well as US 40 between Paradise Road (3 miles east of Genesee) and Heritage Road (Golden).
Per a 9:28 a.m. report from Colorado State Patrol, closures are expected to last about three to four hours, though this may change as clean-up efforts progress. Alternate routes are advised.
