DoBetterDnvr social media accounts taken down, new handle created

The Instagram, Facebook and X accounts for the social media platform DoBetterDnvr were taken down from their respective websites Tuesday morning.

Not much is currently known why the accounts, which had more than 120,000 followers on Instagram and over 25,000 on X, were disabled, but a newly created X account under the handle @DoBetterDenver claimed they were the same person and the previous accounts had been hacked.

The original platform author issued the following statement to The Denver Gazette, while asking to remain anonymous:

“I deactivated my Instagram and X accounts last night. They were not hacked or removed by either platform. Any copycat accounts claiming to be ‘Do Better Denver’ are imposters and should be reported.”

The original account owner did not provide any reasons why.

The new account has created a controversy on the platform, with users unable to determine whether the owner is the same person who operated DoBetterDNVR.

Some are claiming that the handle is someone trying to impersonate the former administrator with similar messaging, even saying that they confirmed directly with the original owner; others are commending the account for returning.

Ryan Schuiling, attributed in his X bio as the executive producer at the Dan Caplis radio show, said that he confirmed with DoBetterDnvr’s original owner that she deactivated the account herself. The DoBetterDenver administrator responded saying that was a lie. Screengrab via X

The accounts had gone viral on several occasions in recent years for posts criticizing Denver for what it described as rampant crime and a homelessness epidemic in the city. It routinely called out Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, The Denver Police Department and Gov. Jared Polis directly for the issues and advocated for leadership change to fix them.

Some had criticized DoBetterDnvr for showing pictures homeless people and drug addicts in their worst moments without context. Others have hailed it as providing Denver residents a window into the ills plaguing the city.

The former account’s administrator has declined to be attributed on the record on multiple occasions, citing a fear of professional reprisals and personal safety. In the past, the account had posted content relating to the Tren de Aragua gang and other criminal enterprises.
