Sean Payton says Broncos didn’t come close to a trade at deadline and players not surprised

ENGLEWOOD – The Broncos made no deals at the trade deadline Tuesday. That elicited mostly shrugs from players in the locker room.

With the Broncos 7-2 entering Thursday night’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders at Empower Field at Mile High, multiple players said head coach Sean Payton had been telling them all along he is satisfied with what they have on the roster. Payton on Tuesday said Denver didn’t come close to making a deal.

“Sean’s been telling us all year he loves our team, loves the receiver group and we don’t really need anything and he’s kept his word,’’ wide receiver Troy Franklin said after a walkthrough practice at Broncos Park.

With that it mind, Franklin said it was “no surprise” Denver didn’t make a deal.

“I think we’ve known that Sean believes in us and we believe in ourselves,’’ said tight end Evan Engram. “I think we still got a lot of things to get better at but we got a great group. We got a lot of great play makers that are getting better every day.”

Nose tackle D.J. Jones pointed to the Broncos’ record, which includes an ongoing six-game winning streak.

“What we got is all we need,’’ Jones said. “They didn’t trade. … I’m very confident. … We’re 7-2 for a reason.”

The Broncos are in sole possession of first place in the AFC West and tied for having the best record in the conference. Payton was asked if they came close to making any kind of deal.

“No,’’ he said. “I think we discussed a few things, but (it’s) all good.”

Payton shrugged off any talk about the Broncos having looked to trade for a receiver, saying, “We’re invested in and like this group and where we are going.”’

Quarterback Bo Nix was happy to hear the confidence Payton has in the team.

“It’s great,’’ Nix said. “Obviously, if there’s a need you want to get it, but we feel like we have all the pieces. Sometimes when (a trade happens), it shakes things up. We have something good going, and we just want to keep riding this wave and finding ways to win.”

The Broncos rank No. 3 in the NFL in total defense and No. 4 in points allowed. They have been inconsistent on the other side of the ball, ranking No. 13 in total offense and No. 14 in scoring.

But the Broncos, helped by a mostly easy schedule, haven’t lost since a 23-20 setback at the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 21. They have overcome fourth-quarter deficits in four of the past five games, including winning 18-15 at Houston on Sunday after having trailed 15-7 early in the quarter.

Denver has been outscored in the first three quarters this season 130-129 but has outscored foes 96-36 in the fourth. While Payton said there is a “focus obviously in starting fast,” the Broncos didn’t consider slow starts as a reason to make a trade by Tuesday’s deadline.

As for teams in the AFC West making deals Tuesday, nine-time defending champion Kansas City (5-4) also stood pad. The Chargers (6-3), with an offensive line battered by injuries, acquired guard Trevor Penning from New Orleans for a sixth-round pick, and sent reserve defensive back Ja’Sir Taylor to the New York Jets for a seventh-round selection. The Raiders (2-6) dealt disgruntled receiver Jakobi Meyers to Jacksonville for fourth- and sixth-round picks.

The biggest trade involving an AFC playoff contender was Indianapolis (7-2) acquiring star cornerback Sauce Gardner from the New York Jets for reserve receiver Adonai Mitchell and two first-round picks.

“That one was a shocker for sure,’’ Engram said. “That’s a good little move.”

As for the Broncos not making a deal, Engram did not consider that a surprise at all.
