Sean Payton confident penalty numbers will drop: ‘I think you can correct that’ | Broncos notebook
The Broncos have yet to solve their penalty problems now 10 games into the NFL season.
Denver (8-2) hosts the Chiefs (4-5) on Sunday at Empower Field while leading the league in penalty yardage (736) with 83 total penalties committed. Broncos coach Sean Payton has expressed frustration with those calls, especially before the snap, dating back to the early season.
Yet he remains confident the team can reverse that trend entering Week 11.
“I think you can correct that, and we plan on it,” Payton said on a Monday teleconference call. “There are one or two a game that get called (that) you look at and I’m like, ‘I don’t agree with that.’ But that being said, there’s a sum total and certainly it has to be a point of emphasis.”
The Broncos enjoyed a mini bye week after playing Thursday night football to rest and address mistakes after a 10-7 win over the Raiders. Meanwhile, the Chiefs have won three of their last four games.
“It’s amazing how quickly it feels like this stretch of six (or) seven weeks has gone by, and you get in a routine,” Payton said. “So, having this mini (bye) weekend, especially with Kansas City coming off a bye, it’ll be an important game, obviously. It’s a divisional game, and we’ll be ready to go.”
Crawshaw struggles
Rookie punter Jeremy Crawshaw struggled in the first half Thursday with several shanked punts that went less than 40 yards. Payton reflected on those issues Monday with consideration of weather conditions at Empower Field against the Raiders.
“The wind picked up a little bit more. I’m sure it was a little breezier than he’s punted in those types of conditions. When you watch those guys when they’re by themselves, all they do is drop the ball (and) drop the ball to try to find a consistent (motion),” Payton said. “When it moves — when it hits your shin — then obviously that’s a problem. So, I think it’s one of those tough lessons learned. He has the ability to kick a different style punt if he ever felt it was windier which would be a more end-over-end, less drop driven punt.
“I think it was crystal clear what was happening.”
Briefly
Chiefs coach Andy Reid addressed Kansas City media on Monday about the team’s mentality coming off a bye. Reid said: “There should be an urgency every week.” … Kansas City expects rookie left tackle Josh Simmons to return to practice this week after a four-game absence (family matter). … The Chiefs are a 3.5-point road favorite on Sunday against the Broncos, according to FanDuel.
