Kickin’ It with Kiz: Who do CU Buffs hire as next athletic director? It’s a no-brainer
Colorado athletic director Rick George gambled on Deion Sanders. It paid off at first. But the table doesn’t stay hot for long.
– Bryan, rolling the dice
Kiz: Prime Time began in Boulder with a phone call. With the CU football program at rock bottom in October 2022 and looking to fill a job that no coach in his right mind would want, former Buffs receiver and Olympic skiing star Jeremy Bloom called George and said: “We’ve got to go get Deion Sanders.” Fast forward three years, with the shine fading from the bold hire of Sanders and George moving away from the day-to-day operation of the Colorado athletic program. Who should be the next A.D.? This is a no-brainer. Since retiring his shoulder pads and mogul skis, Bloom has founded a successful software company and served as CEO of the X Games. At age 43, he is the aggressive and energetic business leader that Sanders and the Buffs need.
My thoughts on the Rockies hiring Paul DePodesta as the team’s new president of baseball operations? This will all end in tears.
– Sol, doom scrolling
Kiz: The Rockies went back to the future in the hire of DePodesta, who hasn’t pushed a pencil across a desk in major-league baseball since 2015. When the team formally introduced DePodesta at a press conference Thursday in the basement of Coors Field, the room was packed, from front to back, with the overwhelming flavor of Wonder Bread. Are the Rockies really going to find a bold new direction through the good old boy network?
Yes, the Rockies spend money on players, but it’s how they do it, which has resulted in nothing other than a few sporadic playoff appearances. There’s also the organization’s inability to develop talent, especially pitching, with any sort of consistency over 30-plus years.
– anonymous Rockies fan, hiding his embarrassment
Kiz: The Rockies went outside their very insular organization to hire DePodesta. Now it’s time for DePodesta to think outside the box in building a front-office team. A franchise in need of an extreme makeover can use all the diverse ideas it can get. So I humbly offer three of the savviest ballplayers to ever wear a Rockies uniform for DePodesta’s consideration: LaTroy Hawkins, Terry Shumpert and Eric Young Sr.
There are so many ailments with this Broncos offense: dropped passes, missed assignments, wrong routes, penalties, poor flow of play-calling and, of course, the inconsistent quarterback play.
– C., life-long learner
Kiz: With all the sloppy penalties and lack of progress in the development of QB Bo Nix during his second pro season, I’d be tempted to suggest the Broncos are a poorly coached team if their record wasn’t 8-2 and they didn’t have a self-proclaimed genius on the sideline. With running back J.K. Dobbins now shelved with a foot injury, if coach Sean Payton doesn’t pick up his game, all the promise of the opening 10 games could quickly unravel down the stretch.
And today’s parting shot is a write-in ballot for the biggest villain in Denver sports.
My vote would be for Mark Kiszla or Woody Paige.
– R., can’t quit ‘em
