Nathan MacKinnon dazzles as Avalanche defeat Rangers 3-2 in OT at Madison Square Garden | 5 takeaways

The Avalanche didn’t let a controversial game-tying goal by the New York Rangers slow them down.

A highlight-reel goal by Nathan MacKinnon in overtime gave the Avalanche the 3-2 victory over the Rangers at Madison Square Garden. It was only Colorado’s second win beyond regulation this season.

Here are five takeaways from Colorado’s win Saturday:

  1. With an assist on Parker Kelly’s second period goal, Sam Malinski tied his career high in points with 15. Keep in mind this is only game 28 for the Avalanche and that it took Malinski 76 games to hit that number last season. His agent must be enjoying what’s happening at the moment, as Malinski is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
  2. The Avalanche didn’t have a ton going until the fourth line had a great shift in the offensive zone, leading to Kelly’s goal that made it 1-0. Zakhar Bardakov was particularly strong on the shift, cutting through the defense to get a few good looks at the net. Tight games like this one are where you need your fourth line to make a difference.
  3. The game-tying goal must have been an NHL review because the Avalanche weren’t put shorthanded after they ruled it a goal. Ultimately, it was a close one, simply because the referees on the ice didn’t blow the whistle for Artemi Panarin playing the puck with a potential high-stick. It was right on the edge and there’s good reason to be frustrated if you’re an Avalanche fan. It didn’t matter as Colorado won in overtime. After Panarin’s second whack at the puck, the puck hit Joel Kiviranta’s helmet before another Rangers player touched it. Maybe that’s the technicality the NHL used in that situation.
  4. Nathan MacKinnon has been battling illness the past week and at times it looked that way on Saturday. And then he goes and scores two incredible goals and you just forget about it. His first goal was a Larry Walker-esque smack of the puck out of mid-air into the net, giving the Avalanche the lead late in regulation. In overtime, he sent Will Borgen into a spin cycle before sending a backhand over Igor Shesterkin’s blocker. He continues to score at around a 70-goal pace.
  5. Saturday was a strong bounce-back game for most of the team, but especially Mackenzie Blackwood. He stopped 24 of 26 shots after giving up five in his previous start. The team in front of him helped. At one point in the first period, the shots were 10-5 in favor of New York. The Avalanche outshot the Rangers 37-16 the rest of the way.
