Section of Highway 93 shut down for wind in Jeffco
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office shut down a portion of a Jeffco highway Wednesday afternoon amidst the ongoing wind storm.
Colorado 93 — which runs between Golden and Boulder — has been closed between 58th Avenue in the south and Colorado 170 in the north as of 1 p.m., according to a news release from the department.
The 11-mile stretch of highway goes from Arvada in the south to Eldorado Springs in the north.
Western winds between 30-50 mph are anticipated to blow through the area throughout Wednesday afternoon, with gusts up to 90 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
Sections of the area have already had a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS), or intentional power switch off that mitigates the potential for wildfires during a severe weather event, implemented.
“It is just starting to pick up here in the foothills. Semi-trucks have a history of being blown over on 93 during serious wind storms,” a spokesperson with the sheriff’s office told The Denver Gazette around 1:30 p.m.
The sheriff’s office did not say when the highway will be reopened, but weather forecasts expect heavy wind until 6 p.m. Wednesday.
