Denver Water to replace aging pipes under Sheridan Boulevard

More than a mile and a half of aging water pipes along Sheridan Boulevard will be replaced beginning in January as part of a year-long project by Denver Water.

The project will begin at West 17th Avenue and move north to West 29th Avenue. When the first phase is complete, crews will return to West 17th Avenue and work southward until they reach West 13th Avenue.

“To minimize construction impacts on businesses and traffic, as well as reduce the overall construction timeline, work on Sheridan Boulevard will typically occur at night, requiring nightly lane closures and parking restrictions, Sunday through Thursday, from approximately 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.,” according to a Denver Water news release. “Most work throughout the project will occur in the northbound lanes of Sheridan Boulevard, reducing traffic to one open lane in each direction during working hours. The road will fully reopen each morning.”

Because much of Denver Water’s distribution system dates to the late 1800s and early 1900s, the project is part of a proactive pipe replacement program, according to a statement from Denver Water officials.

The pipe replacement project precedes the Sheridan Boulevard Multimodal Corridor Plan, which aims to improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and motor vehicles.

Some construction impacts on businesses and traffic are expected, along with temporary planned water outages.

Work may also need to take place on other days and times.

Crews will work in two- to three-block increments at a time.

Denver Water will provide detailed information about the outage date and expected duration to impacted customers, along with ways to prepare.

Project updates will be provided via a dedicated project webpage, email updates and on the social media platform Nextdoor.
