USWNT captain Lindsey Heaps signs with hometown Denver Summit FC

Denver Summit FC now has a face of the franchise.

Denver’s expansion NWSL team on Monday announced it had signed Colorado native Lindsey Heaps, formally Lindsey Horan, for its inaugural season.

The U.S. women’s national team captain supported the “For Denver FC” grassroots movement to land a club in her home state and expressed interest in playing for the club someday after the league awarded the team to Denver.

The former Colorado Rush youth player joins Denver Summit FC from Lyon of the top-flight Premiere Ligue in France. She will join the club in June, following the conclusion of her season at Lyon.

“I’m incredibly excited to come home to Colorado and join Denver Summit FC,” Heaps said in a news release announcing the signing. “This club represents something special, not just for the league, but for this community and for the next generation of players growing up here. I’m fully committed to finishing the season strong with OL Lyonnes, and I can’t wait to begin this next chapter in Denver this summer.”

The 31-year-old midfielder has previous NWSL experience, leading the Portland Thorns to the league title in 2017 and scoring the game-winning goal in the championship. She went on to win the NWSL Most Valuable Player honor in the following season.

“Signing Lindsey Heaps is a defining moment for Denver Summit FC,” general manager Curt Johnson said in a news release. “She represents the very highest level of excellence as a player, a leader and a professional. To welcome her back home to Colorado and to have her help shape the identity of this club is incredibly meaningful.”

Originally from Golden, Heaps signed a six-figure deal with Paris Saint-Germain FC in 2012, straight out of high school, giving up a full-ride scholarship to North Carolina, which was nearly unheard of at the time.

Heaps won the World Cup with the U.S. in 2019 and the Olympic gold medal in 2024.

She instantly becomes the biggest signing for Denver Summit FC as the team gets set to begin play this year.

“Lindsey will bring a world-class level to our team and represents the ambition of this club on and off the field,” Summit FC coach Nick Cushing said in a news release. “Lindsey has won at every level of the game. Her leadership, talent, and professionalism will continue to raise the standard for Summit FC when she arrives this summer. We are thrilled to welcome a hometown player back to Denver as we work to win championships and grow our club and community.”

Their inaugural match is scheduled for Empower Field at Mile High on March 28.
