Broncos’ Dre Greenlaw, John Franklin-Myers return to practice, Lucas Krull designated for return from IR

ENGLEWOOD — Broncos linebacker Dre Greenlaw and defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers both returned to practice Tuesday and were pronounced ready for Saturday’s divisional playoff game against Buffalo.

The Broncos also designated tight end Lucas Krull for return from injured reserve. And head coach Sean Payton said he doesn’t expect safety Brandon Jones, on injured reserve with a pectoral injury, to return this season.

Greenlaw, listed as a limited participant in practice, missed the final two games of the regular season due to a hamstring injury suffered Dec. 21 against Jacksonville. But Payton said he will be ready to face the Bills.

“It’s good to have a healthy Dre Greenlaw back in the game,” Payton said.

Franklin-Myers sat out the regular-season finale Jan. 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers after suffering a hip injury Dec. 25 at Kansas City. He said he “feels great” after being a full participant in Tuesday’s workout.

“Give me that opportunity to roll that ball out there, and I’m ready to go,” Franklin-Myers said.

The Broncos (14-3) earned the No. 1 seed in the AFC, giving them a bye in the wild-card round and home-field advantage in the playoffs, starting with Saturday’s game. While Denver is well rested, the No. 6 Bills have a number of injuries and are playing on a short week after winning 27-24 on Sunday at Jacksonville.

“That’s definitely worth getting the one seed, having that break, having that week off to get our bodies right,’’ said Broncos tight end Evan Engram.

Krull returned to practice on a limited basis after suffering a fractured left foot Oct. 2 in practice and having surgery. The Broncos had determined last week the tight end would return to practice this week.

The Broncos have a 21-day window to either activate Krull or shelve him for the season. If the Broncos win the AFC Championship Game on Jan. 25 to advance to Super Bowl LX on Feb. 8 and have not by then activated Krull, they would need to make a decision on him by Feb. 2.

All players on Denver’s 53-man roster were full participants except for Greenlaw. Also listed as limited was linebacker Drew Sanders (foot), who was designated last Saturday to return from injured reserve.

Jones was on a side field doing some work and is eligible to come off injured reserve. But Payton does not expect him to return this season, even if the Broncos make the Super Bowl.

“I don’t think so,’’ he said.

Jones was hurt Dec. 14 at Green Bay and missed the final three games of the regular season. He has been replaced by veteran P.J. Locke, who sat out the second half against the Chargers with a leg injury but is fine.

“It sucks when you lose a guy like (Jones) but having a guy like P.J., who studies his butt off, right here in line to be the next guy for me to play with is amazing,’’ said Broncos safety Talanoa Hufanga.

Bolles ‘grateful’ for All-Pro nod

Left tackle Garett Bolles earned first-team All-Pro honors last Saturday for the first time in his nine-year NFL career.

“Super grateful, man,” said Bolles, Denver’s longest tenured player, who was named second-team All-Pro in 2020. “Obviously, I’ve worked hard to get to that point. To be recognized, finally, it’s about time. But at the same time, I’m grateful for my teammates. … I’ve got great dawgs all around me that make my life so much easier. I’ve just got to protect, and that’s the thing I love to do.”

Bolles was one of two NFL tackles with no sacks allowed with at least 1,000 offensive snaps, according to Pro Football Focus.

“We know where we’re going,” Bolles said. “When you’re winning, and you’re doing those types of things, obviously you’re going to get those accolades. That just comes with the territory. But I’m super grateful and honored.”

The Broncos also had guard Quinn Meinerz, defensive lineman Zach Allen and safety Devon Key as a special teams player named to the first team. Named to the second team were Hufanga and cornerback Pat Surtain II.

10-year wait to end

The Broncos on Saturday will play their first home playoff game since they defeated New England 20-18 in the AFC Championship Game on Jan. 24, 2016. Two weeks later, they won Super Bowl 50.

“I’m excited,’’ said wide receiver Courtland Sutton, who joined the Broncos in 2018. “I’ve been saying since I got here that we needed to get a home playoff game back in the city. … It was so loud (at a recent home game) that the ref was up there trying to call a foul or something, and no one could hear what he was saying because the fans were doing their thing.

“I can only imagine what it’s going to be like (Saturday), first home game since 2015. It’s well overdue, and I’m excited to see Broncos Country show up and show out.”

Tackle Mike McGlinchey, in his third Denver season, is also fired up.

“I know this town has been waiting for it for a long time and we have as a team,’’ he said. “So excited for the challenge. Obviously, Buffalo is going to be a huge one. I’m juiced to be here.”

Briefly

With Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin stepping down after 19 seasons, Payton offered him “congratulations on an amazing’’ run. “I wish him well,’’ said Payton, who called Tomlin “a close friend.” Payton, who has a deal with the Jordan Brand, said Tomlin has the same shoe size and he regularly had sent Tomlin shoes that are “black and yellow,’’ the colors of the Steelers. … Surtain, in his fifth season, said the playoffs are “do or die.” However, he doesn’t want Denver’s young players to “get too caught up into the moment” because “once you get too caught up, that’s when the nerves start to take over and you get a little antsy.’’ … Engram, who played the past three seasons with the Jaguars, was surprised Buffalo beat them. “I was shocked at that,’’ he said. “I was expecting the Jags to kind of easily get that one.”
