RTD A Line crashes into truck in Aurora, passenger injured

One person was hospitalized with minor injuries after the Regional Transportation District’s A Line crashed into a truck in Aurora Tuesday morning.

The crash took place at Sable Boulevard and East Smith Road, according to a Tuesday afternoon statement from the Aurora Police Department. The injured person was a passenger on the train.

Investigators believe the truck drove over the tracks on the wrong side of the road while the railroad crossing arms were down, according to the statement. The truck then left the scene before authorities arrived.

Video of the crash provided by Aurora Police shows a white pickup truck driving south on the left side of Sable Boulevard in the direction of the rail tracks and Smith Road. The railroad arms are already down as it approaches the crossing.

As the train approaches from the east, the truck, still on the wrong side of the roadway, drives over the tracks and presses into the arm, causing it to flex outward. The train then clips the pickup’s tailgate, causing shrapnel to fly off the truck and damaging the black cover over its bed.

As debris, smoke and what appears to be trash spill out of the back of the now-damaged truck, it drives through the intersection and continues south onto Sable Boulevard.

The RTD’s A Line provides service between Denver’s Union Station and Denver International Airport.

Police are still looking for the truck and anyone with information about it is asked to come forward.
