Air Force’s John McBroom goes 9-for-9 with 12 RBIs in 38-7 win | May 10, 1967 | Colorado’s Top 150 Sports Moments
Happy birthday, Colorado — and Colorado sports.
Leading into the state’s 150th birthday Aug. 1, The Denver Gazette has partnered with the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame to publicize the definitive list of Colorado’s top 150 sports moments.
Colorado Sports Hall of Fame historian Dave Plati and a committee of 10 compiled and will release the list every week until the No. 1 moment on July 31. Plati and Broncos icon Jim Saccomano will unveil the list weekly on a Colorado Sports Hall of Fame podcast at coloradosports.org/podcast/.

In perhaps the greatest single game in state college baseball history, Air Force senior outfielder John McBroom had a career day in the Falcons’ 38-7 win over Colorado College. He set what still stands as NCAA records as he batted 1.000 — going 9-for-9, the most hits in a single game and highest 1.000 average when a player did not make an out. He scored six runs, had 12 runs batted in and 19 total bases. (The latter two are still Air Force records). He almost hit for the cycle twice — two home runs, one triple, three doubles and four singles. He would go on to become a flight instructor, among several accomplishments, in retiring as a Major General.
