2015 Broncos thrilled to return to site of Super Bowl 50 win but wish 2025 team could have joined them

When Bennie Fowler arrived in the San Francisco Bay Area on Tuesday, he was overcome by a flood of memories.

Fowler was a Broncos wide receiver when they won Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara, California, in the 2015 season. Now, 10 years later, he’s returned to do commentary on Radio Row for DNVR Sports with Super Bowl LX to be played back at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday between New England and Seattle.

“You think about a lot,” Fowler said in a phone interview about memories of the Feb. 7, 2016, game. “You think of the preparation. You think of the celebration, the confetti falling, my parents being on the field, my friends in the stands.”

But what about the 2-point conversion pass Fowler caught from Peyton Manning to conclude the scoring in Denver’s 24-10 win over Carolina? It turned out to be the final throw of Manning’s illustrious 17-year career.

“My memory flows back to that play every day,’’ Fowler said. “The fact that I caught Peyton Manning’s last pass changed my life forever.”

OK, but Fowler did agree that perhaps he might be thinking about it a tad more this week.

Fowler is among a number of players from the Broncos’ Super Bowl 50 team expected to be back at the site of the third Super Bowl win in franchise history. Tackle Ryan Harris, now a broadcaster, was scheduled to fly in Wednesday night, and will co-host Sunday the Super Bowl pregame and halftime shows with Scott Graham on Westwood One radio. Running back C.J. Anderson, a native and a resident of the Bay Area, plans to visit Radio Row on Thursday for a variety of interviews.

Harris, who spent 2007-11 with the Broncos as well as 2015, said also expected to be on hand during the week are Hall of Famer Manning, Hall of Fame outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware, still-playing star outside linebacker Von Miller, defensive lineman Malik Jackson and cornerbacks Chris Harris Jr. and Aqib Talib. Fowler, who spent 2014-17 with Denver, said he also expects safety T.J. Ward to stop by.

Head coach Gary Kubiak will be on hand to watch his son, Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, try to win a Super Bowl ring on the same field his father claimed one. Gary Kubiak has not been granting interviews so far heading into Sunday’s game.

“To me, going back to Super Bowl week changes after you’ve won the Super Bowl,’’ Ryan Harris said. “It really feels like the week is for you. And it’s one of the best times to get together with your old teammates. We’re going to connect and reminisce. It was just a one-in-a-lifetime experience.”

But there is one thing putting a bit of a damper on the week for players from the 2015 team. They had hoped this season’s Broncos would be returning to Santa Clara for the big game a decade later, but they lost 10-7 to the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game on Jan. 25.

“It would have been ideal for them to come back and win it in Santa Clara 10 years after, no question about it,’’ Ryan Harris said. “But it was still an incredible year for the Broncos.”

Anderson had been hopeful of the Broncos being back in his home area.

“That would have been nice, obviously, but it wasn’t in the cards,’’ Anderson said. “I’m sure that if the Broncos had won the AFC Championship, there would be a lot of us (from the 2015 team) coming down this way.”

Winning Super Bowl 50 down the road from his native Vallejo, Calif., was the career highlight for Anderson, who played in the NFL from 2013-19, including 2013-17 with Denver. He appeared in three Super Bowls, with the other two being defeats. He was on the Broncos when they lost 43-8 to the Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII in the 2013 season and on the Los Angeles Rams when they fell 13-3 to the Patriots in Super Bowl LIII in the 2018 season.

In Super Bowl 50, Anderson carried 23 times for a game-high 90 yards and scored the Broncos’ only offensive touchdown on a 2-yard run with 3:08 left in the game for a 22-10 lead. Fowler followed by catching his 2-point pass from Manning.

“I know a lot of people are going to expect me to talk about running over (Panthers star linebacker) Luke Kuechly and scoring the game-sealing touchdown,’’ Anderson said when asked about top memories from the game. “That’s great, too, but to me it was all about us winning as brothers. DeMarcus had been in the league for a long time, and he got an opportunity to stamp his Hall of Fame career (with a Super Bowl win). And same with Peyton, it being his last game. And then you have the memories of (running back) Ronnie (Hillman, who died in 2022) and (wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, who died in 2021), who are no longer here with us.”

As for his touchdown, Anderson said he was provided an interesting statistic by ESPN. He has set up a Thursday interview with the network.

“I’m one of 236 people who actually have scored a touchdown in the Super Bowl,’’ he said. “So I think that’s pretty exciting, too.”

Also among the 236 is Jackson, who scored the Broncos’ other touchdown in the game on a fumble recovery in the end zone midway through the first quarter for a 10-0 lead. With game MVP Miller having forced the fumble with a hit on Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, that set the tone for a dominant day by Denver’s defense.

The Broncos ended up getting four takeaways, three on fumble recoveries, with two forced by Miller, and one on an interception by Ward. They recorded seven sacks, with Miller getting 2.5 and Ware 2.0.

“Ten years later, it still feels like yesterday,’’ Ryan Harris said of the win. “I know we all still think we could go out and beat anybody.”

As for Fowler, he is one of 13 players, who all have done it once, to have scored on a 2-point conversion in Super Bowl history. The 2-point conversion entered the NFL in the 1994 season, having been an option in the past 31 Super Bowls.

“Peyton threw it right to me,’’ Fowler said. “It was like the ball was coming in slow motion, and it was like a baby was being thrown toward my way, and I sure as heck better catch that thing, and that’s exactly what happened.”

Fowler, who gave the ball he caught to Manning to commemorate his last NFL throw, recalls the play regularly. But he does admit to thinking about it just a bit more this week.
