Colorado to Italy: Figure skating pair from Colorado Springs help U.S. to Olympic gold in team competition

Colorado Springs figure skaters Ellie Kam and Daniel O’Shea earned gold medals Sunday.

Amber Glenn, who has long trained in Colorado Springs, joined them in the team figure skating event that Team USA won by one point over Japan. The U.S. scored 69 points, Japan had 68 and Italy placed third with 60.

Kam and O’Shea earned 13 of those points, after placing fifth (six points) in qualifying Friday and fourth (seven points) in Sunday’s finals.

Glenn, making her Olympic debut, placed third in the women’s free skate final for eight points.

Lily Dhawornvej, a 16-year-old from Copper Mountain, placed 20th in qualifying in the women’s snowboard big air competition and did not advance to Monday’s finals.

A rising star in the sport after a second-place finish in the World Cup last month, Dhawornvej is also representing the U.S. in the slopestyle which will be held on Feb. 16-17.

Jason Colby, yet another Colorado teen in Italy, will be in action Monday in the ski jumping normal hill trial round. Colby, 19, is from Steamboat Springs.

 – Cody Winters of Steamboat Springs finished 21st in the snowboarding parallel giant slalom, the best finish among Americans.
