Colorado to Italy: Alysa Liu shines, Amber Glenn enjoys redemptive showing in women’s figure skating

Tracking Coloradans in the Winter Olympics

Alysa Liu, who formerly trained in Colorado Springs, became the first American woman to capture a figure skating individual medal in 20 years when she took gold on Thursday.

Amber Glenn, who trains in Colorado Springs, nearly joined her on the podium with a free skate that scored 147.52 – third best in the field – and vaulted her up to fifth place after a 13th-place finish in the short program.

Niklas Malacinski (Steamboat Springs) helped the U.S. to a seventh-place finish in the Nordic combined team sprint, which combines ski jumping and cross-country skiing.

Malacinski teamed with Benjamin Loomis in the event, which was won by Norway.

Cameron Smith, who attended Western Colorado, advanced to the semifinal round of the ski mountaineering men’s sprint on Thursday. He was eliminated in his six-competitor semifinal heat.
