Lafayette bicyclist, 75, dead after run over by dump truck in Boulder
A 75-year-old Lafayette bicyclist was pronounced dead on the scene after he was run over by a dump truck in Boulder Friday morning.
The crash, which happened at the intersection of Colorado Highway 119 and Niwot Road around 11 a.m., took place as both parties were eastbound on Niwot Road, the Colorado State Patrol said in a Friday news release.
The initial investigation indicates the truck was stopped at the traffic light as the bicyclist was approaching from behind it, according to the release. The right turn lane to the highway was coned off, and the truck began turning right as the signal turned green.
At that same moment, the bicyclist was trying to continue traveling east on Niwot when the right-turning truck collided with him, causing the man to be thrown from his bicycle, according to the release. The truck then drove over the man and stopped on the shoulder of the highway’s southbound direction.
Responders pronounced the bicyclist dead on the scene; the driver of the dump truck, 61-year-old Scott Marquardt from Platteville, was uninjured, stayed on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, according to the release.
