Kylie Minogue’s Ball Arena concert canceled in favor of Denver Nuggets

Gracious superstar issues apology to fans and wishes team well in NBA playoff game

There is no truth to the rumor that Kylie Minogue will be singing the national anthem at Ball Arena on Tuesday (April 29) when the Denver Nuggets host the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 5 of their tense NBA playoff series.

Even if they are — make that “were” — both scheduled to be performing there at the same time.

Minogue’s “Tension Tour” stop, long scheduled to take place Tuesday at Ball Arena, has been canceled (not postponed) because the Nuggets will now be playing there at 8 p.m. that same night. That game was made necessary by the Nuggets’ loss to the Clippers on Monday night, ensuring the need for a fifth game in the best-of-seven playoff series.

The Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche and Ball Arena are owned by Kroenke Sports & Entertainment. Various contracts with concert promoters always stipulate that NBA and NHL teams get first scheduling priority at this time of year, when schedules are determined by the leagues as the four rounds of playoff series proceed.

This was to have been Minogue’s first concert appearance in Denver. Late Wednesday, she posted a message to her fans on social:

“Hi, Lovers. I’m so sorry that we’re not able to visit Denver on the Tension Tour due to a scheduling conflict with the NBA playoffs. I was really looking forward to performing in Colorado for the first time!! Sending my best to the Denver Nuggets for their hometown games, and I really hope to visit you all in Denver soon. Love Kylie.”

Even though Nuggets-Minogue conflict was unavoidable the moment the Clippers beat the Nuggets on Monday night, music fans were not alerted that the Minogue concert was canceled until around 5 p.m. Wednesday. Presumably that delay was so that efforts could be made to find an alternate date, and clearly none was determined.

“Unfortunately, the Event Organizer has had to cancel your event,” Ticketmaster told Minogue ticketholders. “You don’t need to do a thing. We’ll issue a refund to the original method of payment used at time of purchase, as soon as funds are received from the Event Organizer. It should appear on your account within 14-21 days.

Still, for that entire two days, both events remained simultaneously listed on  Ball Arena’s web site calendar, and Ticketmaster continued to sell tickets to both events up until 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Talk about “Tension.”

Several Minogue ticket-holders expressed their anger to The Denver Gazette that were not contacted about the postponement earlier. “My sister and niece are flying in from Oregon from Kylie,” said Mary Kennedy of Highlands Ranch, including an expletive in her comment.

Minogue, a two-time Grammy Award-winner also known as “The Princess of Pop,” is known for the hits “The Loco-Motion,”  “Confide in Me,” “Can’t Get You Out of My Head,” “Love at First Sight” and “All the Lovers.” She is the highest-selling Australian female artist of all time.

The “Tension Tour” is already her 26th headlining concert tour following the release of the studio albums “Tension” and “Tension II.”
