Packers QB Jordan Love doesn’t slide during runs so Broncos looking to ‘make him pay the price’

ENGLEWOOD – Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love can do a lot of things. One thing he doesn’t do much is slide when he runs with the ball.

Broncos defensive players have taken notice of that heading into Sunday’s game against the Packers at Empower Field at Mile High. In interviews with The Denver Gazette, several made note of how Love often doesn’t give himself up after he takes off.

“A quarterback that doesn’t want to slide then, it’s, per se, obviously within reason, you make him pay the price,’’ Denver defensive tackle Mike Purcell said after practice Friday at the Centura Health Training Center. “So you take your shot when you can. … That’s his choice. Obviously, our job is to stop them and if he doesn’t want to slide and it gives us a chance to take a shot, we’re going to take a shot.”

When talking about how the fourth-year quarterback doesn’t slide, outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper said it’s pretty simple what the Broncos are looking to do.

“You hit him,’’ Cooper said. “You hit him. … You don’t slide, that’s your fault.”

Love, 24, is in his first season as Green Bay’s starter, having replaced the legendary Aaron Rodgers. He has thrown for 1,083 yards with eight touchdown passes and six interceptions for the 2-3 Packers. This season Love has run 18 times for 109 yards and two touchdowns.

It has come up about how he doesn’t like to slide. After Love had a 24-yard run in Week 2 at Atlanta, Packers coach Matt LaFleur said he told Love to slide the next time. But that the quarterback “fired back,” saying he didn’t because the team needed some “juice” at the time.

“He’s definitely a threat,” said Broncos defensive end Matt Henningsen. “Being a young quarterback, he’s got fresh legs under him and he can run the ball. He scrambles. He doesn’t like to slide, so he can take a hit and it’s something that we definitely got to neutralize. … If he doesn’t give himself up, we got to stop him, just bring him to the ground and give him a hit and maybe next time he’ll slide.”

Henningsen said after some good hits that Love might “like to be a quarterback again” and then slide.

“You’re obviously not hunting for him, but you treat them like a runner, a running back,’’ Henningsen said of quarterbacks who don’t’ slide. “That’s what they are. If they’re not sliding and if they’re not protecting themselves, they don’t get that protection. … Usually young quarterbacks don’t slide as much and then as they get older, they start to slide more. That’s just how it goes because you can’t take that many shots and stick around in this league.”

Cornerback Damarri Mathis said the Broncos (1-5) can’t ever let up on defense when Love runs due to the knowledge he doesn’t slide.

“When he scrambles, make sure we’re physical with tackling him. … I would just say, ‘Make our force known,’’’ Mathis said.

But the Broncos know it won’t be easy to contain Love even though he has had his ups and downs this season.

“He can make those throws and he can run the ball,’’ Purcell said.

“He’s athletic,’’ Mathis said. “He can make every throw. We got to keep him in the pocket. Rush and coverage got to work well.”

Cooper said the 6-foot-4 Love has the makings of being a solid signal caller.

“He’s got a lot of talent,’’ Cooper said. “Young guy. I think he’s really athletic. Taller, so he can see. I think he’s going to turn into a really good quarterback.”

But if Love gets loose Sunday and then doesn’t slide, it’s quite apparent what the Broncos will be looking to do.

“You hit him,’’ Cooper said. “That’s it.”
