Denver has delayed consideration of a potential $17.8 million lease agreement for the 200-room Embassy Suites by Hilton hotel at 7525 E. Hampden Ave.

The agreement was to be reviewed by the Denver City Council’s finance committee this week, but was withdrawn from committee consideration “at the request of the administration,” a Denver City Council spokesperson said.

The hotel would house homeless families with children, transgender and gender-neutral homeless people, according to the city.

If the agreement is approved, the city’s lease with Archway Investment Corp., a nonprofit that creates affordable housing for low- and moderate-income families and seniors in Denver, would last until the end of 2028.

The lease agreement must first go through the finance committee and then get the City Council’s approval.

A southeast Denver community group has scheduled community meetings to discuss the potential homeless housing lease, citing concerns. Hamilton Middle School plans to host one at 10 a.m. Dec. 16.

The community group, Safe and Thriving Southeast Denver, claims the hotel will be “low barrier” and require fewer background checks, as well as a lack of mental illness treatment before residing in the hotel.

The group is also concerned about the potential for increased crime, litter, drug use, decreased property values, vandalism, theft and small business closures.
