Cheapest place to buy eggs in Denver? The answer may surprise you

Specialty grocers like Whole Foods, Sprouts and Marczyk offer the cheapest eggs in Denver.

The price of eggs is soaring across Colorado and it has many consumers hunting for deals. Google searches for “cheapest place to buy eggs near me” have increased 400% across the U.S. in the last day.

The average price for a dozen eggs reached $4.15 nationwide in December, according to The Associated Press. And although it was still 67 cents cheaper than the high-water mark set two years ago, the Agriculture Department said to expect prices to rise another 20% this year.

The AP reports the main reason prices have climbed recently is because of the bird flu outbreak, which started in 2022.

The other factor, in Colorado, is the recent law that went into effect Jan. 1 requiring all eggs to come from cage-free chickens. An effort by state Republicans to overturn the requirement failed last month at the State Capitol.

“Right now, how things are, we’re prioritizing chicken welfare over the welfare of low-income families who are struggling to put food on the table,” Rep. Ryan Gonzalez, R-Greeley, who co-sponsored the bill, said.

So, where is the cheapest place to buy eggs in Denver? Surprisingly, specialty grocers Whole Foods, Marczyk and Sprouts, had the lowest prices. Traditional grocery stores King Soopers and Safeway and big box grocers Walmart and Target were among the pricier options in Denver.

The Denver Gazette researched a number of options, focusing on a dozen cage-free eggs, white or brown. These prices were posted around 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 3, 2025, and are subject to change.
