Aurora man arrested, victim identified after shooting Sunday

An Aurora man was arrested on first-degree murder charges in connection with a fatal double shooting early Sunday morning in an Aurora parking lot.

Brandon Ellis Sutton, 32, was arrested Sunday afternoon by Aurora and Denver police for allegedly shooting two men, and killing one, in a parking lot in the 15000 block of East Mississippi Avenue, according to a news release from the Aurora Police Department.

The man killed was 26-year-old Ra’jon Darquell Joseph, according to a Tuesday news release from the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office. He died of injuries suffered from the gunshot wound his death is classified as a homicide.

Police responded to the incident at about 2:15 a.m. Sunday morning, finding two men with apparent gunshot wounds, according to the police’s release. Joseph sustained life-threatening injuries and later died in the hospital; the other sustained non life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive.

Police believe Sutton and the men knew each other, and there are currently no other outstanding suspects, according to the police’s release.

The address provided by police matches that of the Oasis Bar and Grill. The owners of the bar told The Denver Gazette on Sunday that no employees or patrons were involved in the shooting outside, and that they are fully cooperating with the investigation.

“The safety and well-being of our community, guests, and staff have always been — and will continue to be — our highest priority,” the owners said. “Our hearts are with everyone impacted, and we remain committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all.”

Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.
