Denver District Attorney charges two Irish nationals in connection to roofing scam
Dean Morgan and John McNamara have both been charged with theft and racketeering following a roofing scam this year
Two Irish nationals living in Denver have been charged in connection to a roofing scam that targeted older residents in the city, leading to thousands of dollars allegedly stolen.
The 2nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office filed charges Thursday against Dean Morgan and John McNamara following a “fraudulent roofing scheme” between April 17 and mid-May, according to a news release from the office. The duo were arrested in New York City earlier this month, right before boarding a plane to leave the country.
The district attorney office’s Economic Crimes Unit, Elder/At-Risk Unit and the Denver Police Department began investigating the duo on April 24 after an elderly person reported that a roofing company had scammed them out of over $25,000 in checks, according to arrest records.
The team, claiming to be called Mary Jim’s Roofing & Masonry, would go door-to-door in Denver, allegedly telling people that their roofs required urgent attention because they were infested with insects, squirrels or raccoons.
The contracts the duo provided the victims included a fake business address in Denver. One contract was worth $29,000, according to arrest records. Mary Jim’s Roofing & Masonry was also not registered on the State of Colorado Secretary of State’s website.
Though the duo allegedly completed some work on the victims’ homes, they never finished any of the contracted jobs and disappeared after the checks were cleared.
Both were each charged with four counts of theft and one count of racketeering.
Morgan and McNamara are also under investigation for similar crimes in California, according to the press release.
Anyone who thinks they may have been victimized by Morgan and McNamara is asked to call David Dawson, an investigator with the DA’s Economic Crimes Unit, at 720-913-9054.
