Officers from the Lakewood Police Department fatally shot a man after responding to trespassing and robbery reports Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the incident happened at around noon near the intersection of West Colfax Avenue and Garrison Street.
Officers responded to the area after the suspect, a man in his 20s or 30s, was seen trying to break into locked cars at the car dealership Prestige Audi.
While responding to the dealership, a robbery was reported at a nearby Safeway on West Colfax Avenue; however, the robbery has not been confirmed, police said.
Officers responding to the robbery saw a man matching the description of the car dealership suspect at the intersection of West Colfax Avenue and Glen Dee Drive. The man then ran away into a nearby neighborhood.
Officers chased the man to the 1500 block of Glen Dee Drive at which point the suspect pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the officers, police said.
Multiple officers fired at the man, hitting him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
No officers are believed to have been injured during the altercation. The suspect’s identity will be released by the county coroner's office at a later date.
