Over 130 citations issued, 2 arrests made in street racing crackdown

Two people were arrested and 135 citations were issued during a street racing crackdown late last month, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

State troopers partnered with 19 metro agencies on May 29 to address illegal street racing. Fifty officers on the ground and in the air surveyed the metro area with teams in Denver, Aurora, Brighton, Longmont and Lone Tree.

Most of the street racing groups were relatively small, with 25 participants each. However, the street racing gathering in Lone Tree attracted an estimated 400 to 500 vehicles, according to the news release.

That large group gathered for about an hour before dispersing, which allowed marked and unmarked officers to conduct traffic stops nearby.

“Street racing has been and continues to be a dangerous game with lethal consequences,” said Cpt. Matthew Beaudin of CSPs’ Investigative Service Section. “We hear the complaints of citizens, we have seen the results of it, and we are taking actions to stop it from happening. There is never a reason to conduct illegal street racing, especially when there are alternatives available.”

Often times, street racing events coincide with other crimes such as property damage, weapons violations, drug crimes, stolen vehicles and parts, officials say.

Law enforcement is asking the public to continue being diligent and report any street racing activities online at ReportStreetRacing.com or by calling 911.
