Police: Man crashed stolen tow truck outside of Greeley police headquarters, injured officer
A Weld County man was arrested Monday after stealing a tow truck and ramming it into concrete poles outside of the Greeley Police Department headquarters, the Weld County Sheriff’s Office announced.
Deputies said 37-year-old Rudy Salazar is being held in the Weld County Jail on five counts of attempted first-degree assault and one count each of aggravated motor vehicle theft, criminal mischief, violating the terms of his parole and driving under the influence.
The incident began at 8 a.m. when the sheriff’s office received a report that Salazar stole a tow truck and was under the influence of narcotics.
Immediately after, the sheriff’s office received numerous reports of a tow truck crashing into multiple vehicles and non-moving objects.
At one point, Salazar veered into the wrong lane of traffic and crashed into multiple oncoming cars while driving between 37th and 32nd avenues toward downtown Greeley, deputies said.
Salazar eventually reached the police headquarters at 2875 W. 10th St., arriving as two officers were leaving in their personal vehicles. Salazar crashed into one of the officer’s vehicles and narrowly missed the second, deputies said.
Salazar then drove the tow truck toward the security gate for the police headquarters’ parking lot. But he struck the control panel first, stopping the tow truck on concrete poles.
After coming to a stop, Salazar exited the tow truck, crawled under the security gate and ran toward the headquarters building, but was detained by officers before he got there, deputies said.
Salazar and the officer he crashed into were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, deputies said.
The sheriff’s office is investigating the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Jerry Porter at 970-400-2889.
Tipsters can also call the sheriff’s office at 970-356-4015 or Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 to remain anonymous and be eligible for a $2,000 reward.
