Juvenile under 13 years old arrested in connection to Rotella Park fatal shooting
1 juvenile killed, another injured in the Saturday night shooting.
Adams County deputies arrested a juvenile under the age of 13 in connection to the double shooting that occurred at Rotella Park on Saturday.
The Adams County Sheriff’s Office initially responded to a shooting report at Rotella Park — a park located near a community of apartment complexes in the Welby/Coronado neighborhood just south of Thornton, near Coronado Parkway South and York Street — around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.
Deputies found two juveniles suffering from gunshot wounds at the park. One of the juveniles, a boy with a gunshot wound to the neck, was pronounced deceased despite life-saving measures by responders.
Investigators found that a group of up to seven boys were at the park before another teen pulled out a gun and shot the two victims, a spokesperson with the sheriff’s office told The Denver Gazette Sunday.
The sheriff’s office said a suspect under 13 years old was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of first-degree murder, first-degree assault and illegal possession of a handgun by a juvenile, according to the release. The identity and photo of the suspect will not be released due to him being a minor.
The case will be presented to the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office to decide official charges and whether the suspect will be tried as an adult.
“In this generation, it’s all about violence and there’s nothing really safe to do anymore,” 17-year-old Destiny Williams told The Denver Gazette’s news partner, 9News, at Rotella Park. “You step out the door and it’s just violence. Constantly thinking you’re going to get hurt when you step outside and you won’t make it back to your bed.”
“It’s just horrible because people don’t understand the harm they’re doing to other people, putting into other communities. They don’t understand we’re all trying to live our lives and be normal,” 16-year-old Gina Morales, Williams’ friend, said. “They just don’t care.”
