Residents can now apply for Denver’s $29 million rental assistance program

Denver residents struggling with rent can now submit applications for the city’s $29 million assistance program.

The city opened the application portal for its Temporary Rent and Utility Assistance program on Tuesday. Residents who earn 80% or below of the area median income are eligible to get the assistance.

The Denver City Council and Mayor Mike Johnston negotiated over the program’s final funding, ultimately ending up with $29.1 million for 2024.

The funding has grown over the years. The city spent $22 million for the rental assistance program in 2023, $25 million in 2022 and $13.6 million in 2021, according to Denver’s finance department.

One in three Denver households pay more than 33% of their income toward housing, according to Denver’s Housing Stability Department. The program assists with rent payment for up to six months per calendar year. It also offers assistance with utility payments.

To qualify, a renter, who must either live in Denver or displaced from the city in the past 90 days, needs to have a household income at or below 80% of the area median income and experienced an unexpected financial hardship or other housing crisis.

Applicants do not need to disclosure their immigration status. They also don’t need to involve landlords. They can get more information from denvergov.org/RentHelp or denvergov.org/EvictionHelp for legal help.
