Denver police to increase expired license plate enforcement this week
It will be the second such enforcement campaign since July, months after a new policy limited enforcement of expired license tags in Denver.
The Denver Police Department on Monday announced a campaign to go after expired tags this week.
It will be the second such enforcement campaign since July, months after the city decided to limit law enforcement from pulling over drivers solely on expired license tags. Authorities said the effort is effective in motivating drivers to renew their license plates.
In one enforcement period in July, Denver police officials said they issued 430 citations and witnessed “a significant increase of vehicle owners registering their vehicles.”
Denver police has partnered with Colorado State Patrol, the Aurora and Colorado Springs police departments on the week’s enforcement effort.
For the week beginning on Sept. 23, officers will occasionally stop drivers with expired temporary or permanent license plates along the Interstate 25 and Interstate 70 corridor, the police said.
If one gets pulled over in Denver with an expired license plate, that’ll be a $95 fine.
Police reminded vehicle owners that registrations have a 30-day grace period after expiration, while temporary license plates don’t.
A low-level traffic stops policy, passed in May, limited police from pulling over drivers with expired license plates. Officials reasoned that the move avoids wasting the police’s time on traffic stops for lower level offenses. Instead, it allows for more time to enforce higher level crimes, such as reckless driving, DUI’s and traffic signal offenses, officials said.
Police can conduct stops for low level offenses if the driver is suspected of another serious crime. Also, a clause in the new policy allows Denver police to conduct one-week enforcement campaigns.
