Highlands Ranch driver pleads guilty in death of teen killed on his way to school

Alex Mackiewicz, 13, was hit and killed on March 6 while riding his one wheel to school.

The driver who struck and killed a Highlands Ranch teen who was on his way to school earlier this year pleaded guilty on Monday morning.

Ruben Morones appeared in Douglas County District Court where he pleaded guilty to careless driving resulting in death. As a result of the plea, charges of careless driving resulting in injury and disregarding a traffic signal were dismissed.

He was arrested in connection with the March death of 13-year-old Alex Mackiewicz, who was hit and killed just before 7 a.m. March 6 at the intersection of Highlands Ranch Parkway and Venneford Ranch Road. Alex was riding his one-wheel to school, and he was in the crosswalk with a walk signal when he was hit, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said their investigation found Morones had likely run a red light, deputies said. There’s no indication that Morones was speeding.

Morones is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 7.
