BMW X3 catches fire in Littleton, causing damage to two nearby vehicles
Firefighters extinguish BMW fire in Colorado amid August recall over water pump defect
A late-model BMW X3 SUV caught fire on Sunday night just south of Mineral Avenue in Littleton, according to South Metro Fire Rescue.
The incident occurred at 8071 S. Broadway at approximately 8:07 p.m., as initially reported by the agency on social media platform X.
The address is the location of Sterling Service Inc., an automotive shop which services Mercedes and BMW vehicles. The Denver Gazette reached out to the business, but shop managers provided no comment on the fire.
Of note, BMW ordered a recall of nearly 721,000 vehicles back in August for a faulty water pump that could result in increased fire risk, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall affected 2012–2018 models, including the 3 and 5 series, as well as the X3 and X5.
The faulty water pump could lead to a “thermal event” according to documents filed by BMW, with 18 reported field incidents at the time the recall was issued.
According to a record provided by the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles, the vehicle involved in this fire was from the 2013 model year, making it one of the vehicles affected by the August recall. BMW X3 SUVs of these model years are gas powertrain vehicles.
The fire originated in the engine compartment of a vehicle and caused significant heat damage to two nearby cars, according to authorities. No occupants were present in any of the vehicles, and no injuries were reported, the agency said.
A fire crew from Tower 18 deployed a 1.75” line, quickly getting water on the fire and holding the fire from spreading and causing further damage, according to the fire agency. The Littleton police also assisted with the response.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined, authorities from both agencies said.
This is a developing story.
