At the center of Denver’s northern boundary lie the historic Globeville and Elyria-Swansea neighborhoods, a community of working-class Hispanic families these days, originally settled by immigrants from Eastern Europe and elsewhere who came to work in the dangerous and dirty smelters associated with Colorado’s gold and silver booms.
Jim Garcia’s humble, adobe-plastered clinic stands sentinel atop the Lincoln Street hill in north Denver, its front doors looking out in the distance to a bustling dog food factory, a contentious highway construction project and the myriad tiny, century-old houses where many of his patients live.
The Central 70 Project, a $1.2 billion undertaking that has left the north Denver neighborhoods of Globeville/Elyria-Swansea in a state of constant noise and construction for four years, has been contentious from its beginning.
