Man killed while reattaching tow strap to disabled vehicle on I-70

A man trying to reattach a tow strap between two vehicles died when the vehicles were hit by a semi Sunday night, police said

A man was killed and two other people injured after a semi crashed into a disabled vehicle Sunday night on Interstate 70 eastbound in Wheat Ridge, according to police.

The crash on I-70 happened west of Wadsworth Boulevard at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police said a vehicle was towing another vehicle with a tow strap, and the strap broke, stranding the disabled vehicle in the center lane. Two men backed up the towing vehicle and were trying to reattach the tow strap when a fully loaded semi crashed into both vehicles.

The semi driver didn’t see the disabled vehicle, police said.

A man who was under the disabled vehicle, trying to reattach the tow strap, died at the scene. A woman who was a passenger in the disabled vehicle was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Another man was taken to a hospital with injuries but was able to speak with officers, police said.

I-70 was shut down for about five hours Sunday night for the investigation, which is ongoing, police said.
