Trump-linked lawyer took part in ‘confidential’ Wisconsin meeting on decertifying 2020 election

The Trump-linked lawyer who compiled memos outlining ways to overturn the 2020 election urged Wisconsin lawmakers last month to decertify the contest, according to a new report.

John Eastman, the lawyer, participated in a meeting at the state Capitol last month and pressed Assembly Speaker Robin Vos to start “reclaiming the electors” and move forward with “either a do-over or having a new slate of electors seated that would declare someone else the winner,” activist Jefferson Davis told ABC News.

Vos, a Republican, walked out of that meeting unconvinced that overturning President Joe Biden’s victory was legally possible.

“I still believe that the Constitution and my oath that I took as an elected official does not allow me to decertify any election whether I want to or not,” Vos said, according to Wisconsin Public Radio. “That’s not going to happen.”

Eastman acknowledged his attendance at the closed-door meeting with pro-decertification activists but declined to reveal what was discussed. “By explicit request from Speaker Vos, that meeting was confidential, so I am not able to make any comment,” he said in a statement to ABC News.

Vos hired former state Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman to conduct an investigation into the 2020 election, which is ongoing. The Legislative Audit Bureau also conducted a review of the contest, and in October made dozens of recommendations for improving the voting process, but said it did not find evidence of widespread fraud.

Eastman put together legal memos outlining ways then-Vice President Mike Pence could try to overturn the election. Despite pressure from former President Donald Trump and the chaos on Jan. 6, Pence did not try to send the results back to certain states Trump lost in November over claims of election fraud. In fact, he sent a letter to Congress saying he did not have the power to reject Electoral College votes, dealing a further blow to Trump’s hopes of denying Biden a presidential victory.

A federal judge in California ruled late last month that Eastman had to turn over documents to the House committee investigating the Capitol riot. Trump “more likely than not” broke the law when he “corruptly attempted to obstruct the Joint Session of Congress on January 6, 2021,” the judge said in the ruling.
