RTD Southeast Corridor light rail repairs completed ahead of schedule

Temporary speed restrictions remain for unrelated track maintenance, but travel times should improve immediately with two tracks available.

Denver’s southeast corridor light rail customers are back up to speed — almost.

The Regional Transportation District announced Friday that the multi-year project to repair the caps on walls along the E, H, and R Lines has been completed three weeks ahead of schedule.

The Coping Panels Project began in April of 2023 to replace defective wall caps, which caused delays for riders due to the need to run trains on a single track during the work. The work could only be done during warm weather and RTD said contractors added extra crews to finish the project early.

Double-track operations resumed Thursday evening.

RTD said that while some temporary speed restrictions during unrelated track maintenance will remain in place along the corridor, customers will see improvements in travel times immediately.

RTD’s Speed Restrictions webpage is updated continuously as restrictions are added or removed from the rail system.

The map and graphics on the webpage show locations of current speed restrictions along the light rail tracks for D, E, H and R lines.

An RTD spokesperson said the ongoing work is to “provide repairs and maintenance, including removal of “rail burns” caused by friction from train wheels, to isolated sections of track.”

The restrictions will be lifted as repairs are completed.

E, H, and R line service will stay on the current schedule through Sunday, Sept. 29.

“As the agency continues to transition from a focus on capital construction to one of enhanced system safety, service reliability, and managing all assets in a state of good repair, multiple projects are now simultaneously underway,” said a release from RTD Thursday. “Leveraging these endeavors in the near term will mitigate the need for costlier and more disruptive efforts in the future.”
