Trump complains about his portrait at Colorado Capitol, blames Gov Jared Polis

President Donald Trump took to Truth Social Sunday evening to complain about his portrait, which was paid for by a Republican fundraising campaign, which depicts him in the President’s Gallery at the Colorado Capitol.

The President blamed Democratic Gov. Jared Polis for the portrait, although the governor had nothing to do with it.

In the Truth Social post, Trump wrote, “Nobody likes a bad picture or painting of themselves, but the one in Colorado, in the State Capitol, put up by the Governor, along with all other Presidents, was purposefully distorted to a level that even I, perhaps, have never seen before. The artist also did President Obama, and he looks wonderful, but the one on me is truly the worst. She must have lost her talent as she got older. In any event, I would much prefer not having a picture than having this one, but many people from Colorado have called and written to complain. In fact, they are actually angry about it! I am speaking on their behalf to the Radical Left Governor, Jared Polis, who is extremely weak on Crime, in particular with respect to Tren de Aragua, which practically took over Aurora (Don’t worry, we saved it!), to take it down. Jared should be ashamed of himself!”

Gov. Jared Polis, through a spokesperson, responded that the governor “was surprised to learn the President of the United States is an aficionado of our Colorado State Capitol and its artwork. The State Capitol was completed in 1901, and features Rose Onyx and White Yule Marble mined in Colorado, and includes portraits of former Presidents and former governors. We appreciate the President and everyone’s interest in our capitol building and are always looking for any opportunity to improve our visitor experience.”

The taxpayers do not pay for presidential portraits. Instead, they are funded by private donations. Until 2018, they were routed through Colorado Citizens for Colorado Citizens for Culture. However, that year, Jay Seller, the group’s president, said not one donation had been received for a Trump portrait.

The portrait has a storied history.

In 2018, a prankster, later identified as Democratic House staffer Katie March, along with the assistance of ProgressNow Colorado, put up a picture of Russian leader Vladimir Putin in the President’s Gallery on the Capitol’s third floor in Trump’s place.

The prank drew international media coverage, including from RT, the state Russian TV network.

That spurred Republicans to action, led by then-Senate President Kevin Grantham of Cañon City, who started a crowdfunding campaign.

In a video linked on the fundraising page, Grantham said, “We’re going to take the reins on this and raise the $10,000 necessary to put up President Donald J. Trump’s portrait in the hall of portraits right here in the Capitol rotunda of the Colorado State Capitol.”

Grantham’s campaign netted the $10,000 needed for the portrait, created by Sarah Boardman, an artist who also produced the Capitol’s portrait of President Barack Obama.

The portrait was hung on Aug. 1, 2019.

“It’s only fitting that a populist such as the president would have the first crowdfunded campaign for a presidential portrait, with contributions as small as $5 and as large as $500,” Grantham said during the portrait’s ceremony.

The governor’s office has not yet responded to a request for comment.
