WATCH: Rock blasting underway on I-70 near Floyd Hill

Since late October, Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) crews have been blasting into mountain rock surrounding I-70’s Floyd Hill corridor just past Evergreen on westbound I-70.

On Tuesday, media was invited to watch CDOT crews blast into a hill south of the interstate in a move officials say will help improve sight lines, straighten curves and improve several bridges.

The Floyd Hill project, about 18 months underway already, is slated to be completed in late 2028.

“Stay the course, stay on I-70. If you do get caught in one of traffic holds they’re typically less than 20 minutes,” Kurt Kionka, director of the I-70 Floyd Hill Project, said.

The project will make the winding section of road safer, add a connection to a frontage road in case of delays, fortify wildlife crossings and barriers and more, Kionka added.

CDOT provides text alerts to update drivers on current blasting operations. Blasting is expected to continue through 2026. Text floydhill to 21000 to sign up for text alerts.
