Live weather blog: Over 400 canceled flights at DIA, interstate closures continue from winter storm

An early November winter storm is hammering parts of the metro Denver area, northern Colorado and eastern Plains Friday, making travel difficult, closing schools and snarling flights at Denver International Airport.

The National Weather Service in Boulder is forecasting heavy snow expected to start Friday morning, with between 8-16 inches for the southern Front Range Foothills, Boulder and the western suburbs of Denver, Castle Rock, Byers and Denver proper by Saturday morning.

A winter storm warning is in effect until noon Saturday.

4:00 p.m. Commercial vehicles banned from I-25

The Colorado State Patrol announced that commercial vehicles will not be allowed to travel on southbound I-25, south of C470 (exit 194), due to a lack of parking and resources between Denver and Colorado Springs.

The agency did not say when the ban would be lifted.

3:00 p.m. DIA still experiencing delays, cancellations

A plethora of cancellations and delays is still striking the Denver International Airport on Friday afternoon, despite snow fall being delayed into Saturday.

As of 3 p.m., 672 incoming and outgoing flights have been delayed at the airport. 480 flights have been cancelled, according to FlightAware.

1:30 p.m. Boulder and Westminster closed

All government and city office buildings in Boulder County closed at 1 p.m. Friday due to the snow.

All city buildings, libraries and recreational facilities in Westminster will close at 3 p.m.

1:30 p.m. Updated road closures

Along with the aforementioned trailer restrictions on westward highways, the Colorado State Patrol released a new list of closed roads.

The roads include:

  • I-70 Eastbound Airpark to Burlington

  • I-70 Westbound Burlington to Limon

  • I-25 Southbound from Pueblo to Colorado/New Mexico state line

  • US 24 Eastbound/Westbound Colorado Springs to Limon

  • US 24 Seibert to Burlington

  • US 40 Westbound from Cheyenne Wells to Limon

  • US 160 Eastbound/Westbound from US 350 Junction to CO 389 Junction

  • US 160 Eastbound/Westbound from Kim to US 385 Junction

  • US 287 Northbound from Wiley to Kit Carson

  • US 287 Northbound/Southbound from Springfield to Larma

  • US 350 Eastbound/Westbound from Trinidad to La Junta

  • CO 59 Northbound/Southbound from Yuma to Kit Carson

  • CO 71 Northbound/Southbound from Last Chance to Punkin

  • CenterCO 86 Eastbound/Westbound from Elizabeth to I-70

  • CO 94 Eastbound/Westbound from El Paso County line to US 40/287 Junction

  • CO 109 Northbound/Southbound from La Junta to Kim

  • CO 266 Eastbound/Westbound Rocky Ford to CO 109 Junction

  • CO 389 Northbound/Southbound from New Mexico state line to US 160 Junction

  • CO 101 Northbound/ Southbound from Las Animas to Toonerville

12:30 p.m. Interstate 70 eastbound to Kansas closes

I-70 is closed east Aurora to Kansas between E-470 (3 miles west of Watkins) and Exit 438: Rose Avenue (Burlington) from Mile Point 292 to Mile Point 438. Road closed expect delays due to safety concerns.

Meanwhile, flight delays have exceeded 540 at DIA and 438 flights have been canceled, according to the most recent update on FlightAware.com.

Boulder County government offices are closing at 1 p.m., Friday, due to snowy weather conditions.

The closure does not impact the tax lien sale taking place at the Boulder County Courthouse, which will remain open until the sale ends later this afternoon.

The closure also does not impact 24/7 public safety or maintenance operations.

11:00 a.m. Denver set to use residential plows Friday evening

Along with the normal snow plows set to work on main Denver roads and highways throughout the snow storm, the Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure will also be deploying residential plows to help keep neighborhoods clear and safe Friday evening, the agency said.

Denver will activate its residential plows starting Friday at midnight, while preparing to run two 12-hour shifts and monitoring conditions. These plows will not carry deicing materials and will not clear roads to bare pavement, but they will help clear the top layer of residential streets, according to a news release from the department.

11:00 a.m. Xcel Energy prepares for snowstorm with tips

Xcel Energy, the largest utility provider in Colorado, is preparing for the potentially record-breaking November snowfall this weekend with crews ready to respond to power outages, according to a press release from the company.

Customers that are experiencing a power outage during the storm should report it to the company through the Xcel mobile app, at xcelenergy.com/out, or by calling 1-800-895-1999.

Insofar as safety during the storm, Xcel asked people to stay away from downed power lines, keep natural gas meters clear of snow and ice to prevent gas buildup and check space heaters for cracks on plugs and wires. People should also never leave a room or sleep with a space heater on, the company said.

10:30 a.m. CDOT implements trailer restrictions on I-70

The Colorado Department of Transportation has implemented a trailer restriction on westbound Interstate 70 west of Golden Friday, according to a news release from the department.

Vehicles with any type of trailer will be restricted from heading west on I-70 at Exit 259 from 4 p.m. Friday till 8 a.m. Saturday. The same restriction will apply to vehicles heading eastbound from Exit 205 in Silverthorne.

“This restriction is designed to reduce the chances of semi truck and other impactful spinouts that require extensive manpower and specialized equipment to clear, and often cause prolonged closures of the interstate,” the department said.

The same restrictions and timeline will be in place for vehicles heading in both directions on US 6 from Mile Point 217 (Keystone) to 229 (Georgetown), US 40 from Mile Point 234 (Winter Park) to 256 (Empire), US 285 from Mile Point 250 (Morrison) to 184 (Fairplay) and I-25 from Mile Point 180 (South of Plum Creek Pkwy) to 150 (N. Academy Blvd).

10:00 a.m. Flight cancellations continue to pile up

As of 10 a.m., 327 flights, both incoming and outgoing, have been cancelled at the Denver International Airport, making up around 32% of all flights, according to FlightAware.

There are currently 279 delayed flights, as well.

10:00 a.m. County offices closed

The majority of county offices surrounding Denver will be closed on Friday due to the incoming inclement weather.

Arapahoe County, Douglas County and Adams County offices will be closed all day Friday. All non-essential Jefferson County and Denver state offices will close at noon.

9:30 a.m. Triple A prioritizes broken-down vehicles 

Triple A was handling calls for service without too much of a wait, but spokesperson Skyler McKinley said that priority is being directed to people whose cars break down on the roads, as opposed to folks in a safer situation and who may just need battery jumps.

9 a.m. Here are the Colorado Courts closed for day or closing early 

  • 3rd Judicial District (Huerfano and Las Animas Counties) Combined Courts and Probation Offices

  • 16th Judicial District (Bent, Crowley and Otero Counties) Courts, Trial Courts and Probation Offices

  • 17th Judicial District (Adams and Broomfield Counties) Courts and Probation Offices

  • Clear Creek County Court and Probation Office 

  • Douglas County Combined Court and Probation Offices

  • Elbert County Combined Court and Probation Offices

  • Lincoln County Combined Court and Probation Offices

  • El Paso County Combined Courts and Probation Offices 

  • Arapahoe County Combined Court and Probation Office will be closed at noon

  • Jefferson County Combined Court and Probation Office will be closed at noon

9 a.m. Denver Veterans Day Parade cancelled

Due to the incoming snow, the annual Denver Veterans Day Parade, which was set to be held at City Park on Saturday morning, has been cancelled.

While the parade will not occur through downtown Denver, the 5k and 10k at City Park will still be held at 8:30 a.m., Saturday morning. The celebratory festival will also happen at the park between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

9 a.m. All road closures

Due to the snowstorm that hit the area between Wednesday and Thursday — and in preparation for the oncoming storm Friday and Saturday — various roads have been closed, mostly all east of Denver.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, the current road closures include:

  • I-70 Eastbound Airpark to Burlington

  • I-70 Westbound Burlington to Limon

  • I-25 Southbound from Pueblo to Colorado/New Mexico state line

  • US 24 Eastbound/Westbound Calhan to Limon

  • US 40 Westbound from Cheyenne Wells to Limon

  • US 160 Eastbound/Westbound from

  • US 350 Junction to CO 389 Junction

  • US 160 Eastbound/Westbound from Kim to US 385 Junction

  • US 287 Northbound from Wiley to Kit Carson

  • US 350 Eastbound Eastbound/Westbound from Trinidad to La Junta

  • CO 59 Northbound/Southbound from Yuma to Kit Carson

  • CO 71 Northbound/Southbound from Last Chance to Punkin Center

8:30 a.m. All school and university cancellations

While snow has not yet hit the Denver metro Friday, the incoming storm is expected to pelt the region Friday afternoon, causing various schools to shudder their doors for the ongoing safety of staff and students.

As of Friday morning, more than 100 local schools have been closed for the day. These closures include Aurora Public Schools, Cherry Creek Schools, Denver Public Schools, Douglas County School District and Jeffco Public Schools and Littleton Public Schools.

The Auraria Campus is closed Friday Nov. 8, including Community College of Denver, MSU Denver and CU Denver.

7:30 a.m. Cancellations beginning at DIA

There were 181 flights canceled and 34 delayed at Denver’s airport, according to FlightAware, as of 7:20 a.m., Friday.

Roads and highways, particularly in southern Colorado are closed, making travel difficult south of Interstate 70 and east of Interstate 25.

Gov. Jared Polis declared a disaster emergency due to severe weather that’s expected in parts of the state and has authorized unarmed Colorado National Guard members to provide winter storm response support, according to a news release from the governor’s office.

Both Jeffco Public Schools and the Douglas County School District have announced that all schools will be closed on Friday due to the current snow conditions.

Denver Public Schools will also be closed on Friday ahead of the incoming snow conditions.
