Wild flooding damages homes and prompts evacuations in southwest Colorado

A local disaster has been declared in southwest Colorado’s unincorporated La Plata County after extreme flooding took place on Saturday in the North Vallecito area following several inches of rainfall. Both Vallecito Creek and Grimes Creek breached their banks, prompting the evacuation of more than 350 homes. The flooding was described as “unprecedented.”

Meanwhile, the San Juan River in the area of Archuleta County’s Pagosa Springs also breached it’s banks, flooding parts of downtown.

Numerous road closures were activated in both areas.

No injuries or deaths have been reported due to the flooding, with damages still being assessed. One reported noted at least 100 homes have water damages.

More rain is expected to hit the area in upcoming days. The NOAA is estimating that between one and four inches of additional rain could fall in La Plata County from Monday through Tuesday morning.
