Man arrested after allegedly firing gun from hotel balcony in Colorado mountain town
A scary situation is reported to have unfolded in Colorado’s Clear Creek County last Thursday, involving a man allegedly firing a weapon in two different public locations.
The first instance is said to have taken place around 3 p.m., with the suspect alleged to have fired shots at the Western Inn Mobile Home Park, located between Lawson and Empire. Once at the scene, deputies were able to determine that shots had been fired into one of the residential units at the property, but that the two victims inside of the property weren’t injured.
By the time law enforcement arrived, the suspect had already left, believed to be on foot. As a result, a shelter-in-place for the surrounding area was ordered with the local I-70 frontage road closed while a search ensued.
While the search for the suspect was underway, information indicated that the suspect could be in Georgetown. After further investigation, a vehicle of interest was located in the parking lot of the Georgetown Lodge.
It was then determined that the suspect allegedly fired shows from the balcony of a second-floor room at the lodge, targeting a victim in the parking lot. The victim wasn’t injured.
Law enforcement was ultimately able to take the suspect into custody without further incident. The suspect was identified as Justin Sanders, 34.
At last report, Sanders remained in custody with a $250,000 bail. Charges faced by Sanders include two counts of attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree homicide, prohibited use of a weapon, and possessing and discharging a firearm while under the influence of alcohol.
All charges are merely accusations and all suspects are to be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
