Curious if you’re being watched by Flock cameras in Colorado? Map tracks 1,091 locations statewide

In recent months, cameras operated by Flock Safety have caused quite a stir in Colorado, with members of the public expressing concerns related to privacy and possible misuse in regard to the cameras that are used to scan license plates of travelers.

Despite the Denver City Council voting against a contract extension with the service, Mayor Mike Johnston decided to extend it anyway, just below a $500,000 threshold that would require city council approval per reporting from 9NEWS. Now, a new contract will allow the city to have free access to a complimentary drone surveillance system for one year, as well.

The topic of whether or not the use of a widespread surveillance system has been a hot topic on Reddit, with many users echoing aforementioned privacy concerns while others hope a better monitoring system, like Flock, could contribute to safer streets.

Most recently, a map on a website called DeFlock that claims to track the location of Flock Safety locations has been making its rounds online, showing a total of 1,091 cameras that have been spotted around Colorado – the website also notes that the list is incomplete, inviting users to submit sightings of cameras that have gone unnoticed thus far.

While the vast majority of Flock Safety cameras have been reported in the Denver metro area, they’ve also reportedly been found in Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Fort Collins, and along the I-70 corridor, as well as in the area of small mountain towns, like the route leading into Telluride and near Cortez. Most cameras seem to be located on major roads and highways, which make sense as license plate scanning is a key function of the service.

Curious to see if your part of the state is utilizing Flock? Explore the DeFlock map here, but remember that some errors and inaccurate placements may exist.

Do you think the use of Flock cameras is a good thing? Or do you think it’s an invasion of privacy? Let us know in the comments.
