Fireworks will be launched from 14,115-foot Colorado peak to celebrate new year

Those in Colorado Springs will want to be sure they look to the sky come midnight on New Year’s Eve to spot a spectacle like no other – fireworks exploding above Pikes Peak.

The 103rd rendition of a New Year classic, the AdAmAn Club will be headed to the mountain’s 14,115-foot summit under winter conditions, leaving the Barr Trail trailhead behind at 9 a.m. on December 30 to put on a show for those in the city below the following day.

The group plans to reach Barr Camp by 2:30 p.m., where they’ll rest up for the night.

The following morning – at about 7:30 a.m., the climbers will continue their trek to the Pikes Peak summit, aiming to reach the top of the mountain by 2:30 p.m. The group will also take a pit stop at the Timberline A-Frame feature of the trail prior to summiting for the tradition of ‘mirror flashing’ to those in the city below (expected timing of about 10 to 10:30 a.m.). Watchful eyes may be able to spot the glint of mirrors on the mountainside.

Once at the summit, crews will start wiring up fireworks around 6 p.m. in preparation to launch a first round of blasts at 9 p.m. in commemoration of the Frozen Five – the original five climbers involved in the long-standing tradition.

Then, at midnight, the larger firework display will blast off.

The group will then travel down from the summit via the Pikes Peak Highway with the help of a 4WD club, arriving at the Cog Depot in Manitou Springs around 2 a.m.

On a clear night, the show hard to miss. Just make sure you have a clear view of Pikes Peak, which is easy to spot given that it towers above Colorado Springs.

A total of 109 members have been officially inducted into the club – including the Frozen Five – since its founding in 1922, many of whom have been pioneers and influential members of the mountaineering community. In addition to those members, there are seven honorary members and 21 associate members that have been inducted over the past century. Joining the club is a difficult process, with a single new member accepted most years with the exception of 1930, when two members were accepted as members 12.5 and 13.5 to avoid having a member be inductee number 13, and 2024, when the daughter and son of a current member were added to the roster, with the son being added posthumously.
