Assault near campground leads to “lengthy search” for suspect in remote mountainous terrain
A scary situation reportedly unfolded near a Saguache County campground over the weekend, resulting in a manhunt that led authorities through rugged mountainous terrain.
According to the Saguache County Sheriff’s Office, a report was received of an assault involving a knife near the North Crestone Campground at about 10:30 p.m. on June 14. Authorities were able to identify Kristopher Roberts as a suspect and a search got underway.
Almost a full day after the alleged assault, Roberts was caught and taken into custody around 8 p.m. on June 15 after what authorities described as “a lengthy search in mountainous terrain.” Per a report from the sheriff’s office, Roberts was previously known to frequent the area around Crestone and Baca prior to being accused of the assault.
Additional information related to the condition of the assault victim and the circumstances around the alleged assault have not been released. All suspects are to be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law with any crimes mentioned considered to be alleged.
